Visual Artist | Painter | Sculptor
I am Bill Odwori Gerald, a Ugandan-born visual artist working in painting, sculpture, and mixed media. Raised by a single mother in Uganda, my artistic journey began in childhood, drawing and modelling figures using clay gathered from nearby swamps. Creativity became a way for me to express my experiences, navigate life's challenges, and find joy in the world around me.
My paintings are deeply rooted in memories of growing up in Uganda, reflecting both the positive and difficult moments that shaped my life. Everyday objects carry personal meaning in my work. These include Musana, the exercise books we used in school, and coffee, one of Uganda's major cash crops, which provided income for our family. Through vibrant colours, textures, and expressive imagery, I revisit these memories with a sense of joy, resilience, and connection to home.
My painting process incorporates papier-mâché, glue, and collage to create textured surfaces, which I develop further using oil paints. By combining materials and techniques, I bring dimension and storytelling into each piece.
Sculpture is another important part of my practice. Growing up near a game park in Uganda gave me the opportunity to observe wildlife in its natural environment. These childhood encounters continue to inspire my sculptures, particularly my representations of animals, their movements, behaviours, and relationships with their surroundings.
I create both large- and small-scale sculptures using recycled paper collected from the environment, which I combine with glue to form papier-mâché. Transforming discarded materials into works of art allows me to explore sustainability while celebrating the beauty and diversity of wildlife.
Now living and creating in Canada, my artistic practice connects memories of Uganda with my experiences in a new country. Through painting and sculpture, I hope to build connections between these two cultures, share stories of our natural environments, and encourage greater appreciation for wildlife, sustainability, and the experiences that connect us.
My art is a celebration of memory, resilience, cultural identity, and the joy of finding beauty in both the past and the present.
